The antique ships wheel certainly makes a statement and is a very decorative maritime antique. The ships wheel was once the most frequently used part of any vessel, prior the invention of the auto pilot. The ships wheel had to be manned permanently whilst the ship was at sea and the person who undertook this job was known as the helmsman. This was an important job because the helmsman had to be able to steer a steady and accurate course in order to keep the ship safe.
