ANTIQUE OCTANT No.8
A superb early 19th Century antique navigator’s Octant engraved THOMPSON, YARMOUTH.
The early features found on this Octant probably date it from 1810 to 1820. - Simon Thompson is recorded as working from two addresses in Yarmouth from 1805 to 1844.
The Octant’s ‘T’ shaped frame is constructed from ebony with brass fittings and ivory scales. The arc scale is crisp and clearly engraved, reading from -2 degrees to 99 degrees. It is further divided into 20 minutes of arc and can measure angles of up to 90 degrees. The arc scale is also engraved with the fouled anchor mark, this was a trade mark for scales divided by JESSE RAMSDEN who was recognised by the Board of Longitude for the accuracy of his scales.
The ivory makers plaque is situated on the crossbar of the octant frame and is engraved THOMPSON, YARMOUTH.
This Octant has the early flat and unbraced brass index arm, which is fitted with an ivory Vernier scale engraved from 0 to 20 and reading 1 minute of arc. There is a clamping screw to the reverse side and there is also a pivoting brass index arm back stop fitted to the frame. This Octant is also fitted with a back sight peep hole pinnula and back sight mirror, these are sometimes reffered to as 3 mirror Octants.
This antique Octant is complete with its original wooden, stepped keystone shaped oak box. (some repairs to the box are present)
A superb example of this mariner’s navigation instrument and it is in excellent condition considering that it is well over 200 years old.

A presentation antique Octant made by W. Gerrard, Liverpool.
A fine late 19th century navigators Octant, brass frame with tulip frame design. Engraved on the arc W. Gerrard, Liverpool.
The silver scale is engraved from -5 degrees to 130 degrees and can measure angles up to 112 degrees, it is divided into 10 minute increments. The index arm has swinging scale magnifier, the silver vernier scale reads from 0 to 10 seconds of arc.
Octant radius 7.5 inches / 19 cm.
This antique Octant is contained within its original hardwood box. It comes complete with all its accessories - two telescopes, one eye piece sun filter and mirror adjusting tool.
The finely engraved silver escutcheon plate mounted on the top of the box reads - THE SAMUELSON PRIZE presented to JOHN OLIVER ARNOLD for proficiency in PHYSICAL SCIENCE June 1876.

A fine early 19th century navigators Octant made by Steele & Co, Liverpool with applied makers plate.
The Octant’s ‘T’ shaped frame is constructed from ebony with brass fittings and ivory scales. The arc scale is crisp and clearly engraved, reading from -2 degrees to 106 degrees and further divided into 20 minutes of arc. This Octant can measure angles of up to 92 degrees.
The scale is also engraved SBR (Spencer Browning & Rust) near the 50 degree mark, this indicates that this Octant's ivory scale was made by Spencer Browning & Rust who produced navigation instruments from 1784 to 1840.
Double-hole sighting pinnula with swing cover. There is a set of three sunshades for both the index arm mirror and the horizon mirror. Concealed pencil compartment in the frame with ivory screw on cap.
This Octant has a braced brass index arm, which is fitted with an ivory Vernier scale engraved from 0 to 20 and reading 1 minute of arc. There is a clamping screw to the reverse side with a fine adjustment tangent screw off to the side.
The ivory makers plaque is situated on the crossbar of the octant frame and is engraved Steele & Co, Liverpool. Steele & Co are recorded as working from an address in Liverpool from 1828 to 1851.
This Octant is complete with its original wooden, stepped keystone shaped box.

A fine early 19th century navigators Octant made by Spencer Browning & Co, London with applied makers plate.
The Octant’s ‘T’ shaped frame is constructed from ebony with brass fittings and ivory scales. The arc scale is crisp and clearly engraved, reading from -2 degrees to 107 degrees. It is further divided into 20 minutes of arc and can measure angles of up to 90 degrees.

Unsigned brass 'T' frame design, with worn trade label inside box.
The silver scale is engraved from -5 degrees to 115 degrees and reading to 98 degrees.
The index arm has swinging scale magnifier, the silver vernier scale reads from 0 to 10 seconds of arc.
Complete with two sighting telescopes, telescope sun filter and mirror adjusting pin, contained within its original mahogany box with lock key.

The Octant’s double ‘T’ shaped frame is constructed from ebony with brass fittings and ivory scales. The arc scale is crisp and clearly engraved, reading from -3 degrees to 109 degrees and further divided into 20 minutes of arc. This Octant can measure angles of up to 92 degrees.
This Octant comes with two telescopes, press on telescope sun filter and mirror adjusting tool. It is also fitted with a hardwood handle and has both index mirror sun shades and horizon mirror sun shades.

The ivory makers plaque is situated on the crossbar of the octant frame and is engraved LANGFORD & SON, BRISTOL. William Langford is recorded as working from an address in Bristol from 1828 to 1873.
This Octant is complete with its original wooden, keystone shaped mahogany box. Trade label on the inside of lid.

The scale is engraved from -5 degrees to 125 degrees and reading to 100 degrees. The index arm has swinging scale magnifier, the vernier scale reads from 0 to 10 seconds of arc.
Complete with two sighting telescopes, telescope sun filter and mirror adjusting pin, contained within its original mahogany box.
