A fine early to mid 19th century navigators Sextant with the classic three ring design frame. Beautifully hand engraved on the arc Crichton, London.
The silver scale is engraved from -5 degrees to 165 degrees and can measure angles to 137 degrees, it is divided into 10 minute increments. The index arm has swinging scale magnifier, the silver Vernier scale reads from 0 to 10 seconds of arc.
This sextant has a 6.5 inch radius.

This antique Sextant is in superb condition and is contained within its original keystone shaped hardwood box. It comes complete with all its accessories - Three telescopes, telescope sun filter, mirror adjusting tool and original magnifiying glass.
The Directory of British Instrument Makers 1550 - 1851 by Gloria Clifton, lists John Crichton as making nautical instruments in London between 1831 and 1865 . This proves that the classic 'three ring' sextant frame was an early design and it has certainly stood the test of time.
